Travel Day

Our next driving day was “Happy birthday Mabi” day, and the Tall Mumma had researched and found a Bakery in one of the small towns we were passing through, so that Mabi could have her traditional birthday-sausage-roll.

Shout-out to Guyra Bakery who made not only a great sausage roll, but also made Mabi a very happy little dog, plus Molly and the Mummas benefited also – so we were all pretty pleased with the birthday treat.

Spectacular Scenery 

Our trip took us through the very pretty New England Range which is a part of the Great Dividing Range, and the very steep Moonbi Range – along the New England highway – as well as through Armidale,which has some stunning architecture, and is somewhere we would like to explore more.

At this time of year, the New England area is awash with the gorgeous white flowers from the Bradford Pear trees which are currently flowering profusely all through the NE area, and the bright green of the weeping willow leaves against their jet-black trunks that line many of the riverways and creeks make for a striking contrast.

It was all such feast for the eyes!

New England

This area is also known as Thunderbolt Country, and is strewn in parts with beautiful huge grey granite boulders and its not at all hard to imagine the Bushrangers of days-gone-by, riding around and living their lives throughout the area.

Frederick Wordsworth Ward (1835–1870), better known by the self-styled pseudonym of Captain Thunderbolt, was an Australian bushranger renowned for escaping from Cockatoo Island, and also for his reputation as the “gentleman bushranger” – and his lengthy survival – being the longest-roaming bushranger in Australian history.
